It’s not just at a national level that women’s’ football is making its mark through the Lionesses; local teams are also on the up including new local club, SK Vipers. The club is going from strength to strength and has recently been boosted with the addition of a ladies’ team.
Set up in late 2017 with just two girls’ teams, SK Vipers is a new venture to promote girls’ football for all ages (from five upwards) in the High Peak and surrounding area. At the start of next season, it will have over 100 girls playing, plus now a ladies’ team who have moved over from Buxton Junior Football Club.
Last year the U11/U12 team was boosted with sponsorship from local company Tarmac. This year the company has given its support to the ladies’ team with a donation towards the cost of the team kit.
Team manager Mel Owen said: “SK Vipers was formed only two years ago, and we now have over 100 girls now playing football. The final piece was to find a ladies’ team, so we are delighted to welcome the Buxton Ladies into the club. We are very grateful to Tarmac for helping fund the team’s new kit. We hope the ladies’ team can be role models for the younger Vipers girls’ team. I am confident that the squad we have for next season will be very successful given the talent we have playing for us next season.”
Tarmac’s stone and powders general manager Pete Butterworth added: “It’s a pleasure to be able to support this local community football club which, although young, is already a big success. We look forward to seeing the SK Vipers ladies’ team run out in their new sponsored football kit next season – we hope it brings them luck!”
The SK Vipers’ ethos is very much based on participation regardless of ability levels, teamwork and development of skill sets. The ladies’ team is made up of players aged 18-35. They play in the Derbyshire Ladies League, which covers Derby, Chesterfield, Matlock, Belper and other areas.
