Tarmac has submitted a planning application to Derbyshire County Council for permission to expand the cement bagging facilities at its Tunstead cement plant near Buxton.
The plans would see the company extend the range of packed cement products it can manufacture on site, reducing the number of lorries on local roads.
Currently the site manufactures Mastercrete and General Purpose Cement and also sends cement to be blended into more specialist products at a sister Tarmac site in Nottinghamshire.
Under these plans, additional plant and machinery would be installed including two new packing machines; and the bagging plant building would be extended, enabling the Tunstead team to also produce Postcrete, one of the company’s most popular cements.
“This is an exciting project for us,” said cement plant manager Chris Bradbury. “Our packing plant is one of the newest and most modern in the industry, having only opened in 2016. With these new plans, we can apply the expertise our team has developed and extend the range of specialist cement we can produce for the markets around the country.
“These plans also offer many benefits for the local area including a reduction in lorry loads on local roads. We currently send our cement to our sister site to be blended and sent back here to be bagged and distributed. With this plan, we will be more self-contained, blending the cement and limestone we produce on site here, ready for packing and onward transportation to DIY stores.”
The plans were submitted on 16 March and the company hopes to hear a decision in approximately three months.
